Being bilingual: why is it a fight and not a choice?

I was born in Montreal. J’ai fait mon primaire et mon secondaire en français. And I graduated from #Dawson, #CRLT 20+ yrs later and THANK GOD I did. My English teacher in high school had no faith in me as my marks were so low — to his defense… my high school buddies (#Lado) probably didn’t have faith either b/c I rarely spoke English in class… “Watch me” I told him…
I then became an English Teacher (TESL at #UQAM) for elementary kids… I wanted to teach them the mistakes they should avoid right from the start…. But the reality is that 2x47mins every 6 days…. is not going to cut it if we want to make a difference.
On ne veut pas éliminer notre langue… on veut se donner une chance dans le reste du Canada et à l’international. On veut partager notre voix, notre savoir… on veut influencer partout et y contribuer notre grain de sable.
Même que lorsque j’ai fait ma maitrise en Education, je l’ai fait en anglais. J’ai gradué de #UNB… oui oui, une université anglophone ET HORS province! Je ne me suis pas sentie comme une traitre, je n’ai pas abandonné mes racines… je ME suis choisie et j’ai investi dans ma carrière.
Je ne serais pas où je suis sans les choix que j’ai fait : sans les amis (es) que j’ai, sans mes expériences, sans mon l’éducation ET sans le fait que je suis bilingue.
Don’t get me wrong, j’ai rushé à Dawson, j’ai rushé à l’UQAM et aussi à l’UNB and I’m far from perfect (en fait, dans les deux langue for that matter) but I use Antidote religiously and ask to help. I make it work because being bilingual is a great asset, a must.
